The low end was based on salt water, the freezing point of which was, at that time, considered to be the lowest you can go. As far as its height, Fahrenheit intended to have 100 be the average human body temperature, but screwed up in his calculations. Oh well, It doesn't matter. As for the butter story, well, that must have been told to you by an EVIL METRICIST, trying to spread LIES about the preferred way of life in CIVILIZED COUNTRIES.
