Kaz!, in addition to Sam's and Stephen's excellent advice, it will probably be useful for you to read the information on the site I've linked to below. The PC Guide has an extensive section on hard drives (click on "Topic Index" to get there), covering their theoretical design and mechanical construction as well as correct installation procedures. It also has a section that walks you through the steps of assembling a new computer, including hard-drive related procedures.
