Anybody who hasn't grossed out on this thread by now can probably handle this:

I used to live in a coal mining town*, back before the term "air pollution" had been coined. The coal was hauled out by steam trains powered by the same coal. Everybody heated their homes with it as well. Needless to say there was a grey pall of smoke handing over the town even in summer. Little soft specks of soot settled over everything. Paint your house snow white, and in a month it was battleship grey. Kids who climbed trees came down with hands that were black. The soot sifted into houses and blackened walls, floors and ceiling. You could get ahead of it a little in summer, but in winter it caught up. Now back to glasses. We put them in the cabinet upright, because you can't change shelf paper twice a week. When you picked up a glass you would blow in it, before filling it. The little specks of soot would fly up in you face, but at least you weren't drinking it. Old habits die hard. That was 1939 -1948 and to this day I still blow into a glass, even if it was upside down in the cabinet.
