Hehe. Yeah, that sounds like the fairly pathetic Thief I AI. I had a similiar experience while playing the *other* demo level. There is this one point where you go down a long stone spiral staircase, and at the bottom are two or three guards. I forget exactly the best way to get by them, but on one of my many replays, I decided to try to pull a Stephen and just kill them. So I hid under the stairs (there was a small place under the staircase where you could hide and be in complete shadows) and started sniping the guards when they went by. As is the case in Thief, I got the first one, he fell, and then the others were alerted and came running to see what had happened. They saw their buddy on the ground, and started looking around suspiciously for me. Now, of course, they were in superman mode, so they couldn't be killed with one shot anymore. So I spent the next five minutes unloading arrows into them from under the stairs, while they screamed and hollered and basically acted like complete doofuses. Like they couldn't figure out that I was UNDER THE STAIRS! It's the only place I *could* have been, sheesh!

However, before I got them all (more and more kept coming as I kept plunking guards!) I ran out of arrows, and had to make a mad kamikaze charge into their midst. Needless to say, as soon as I revealed myself, they all wailed on me with their swords and I died.

But, from what I've *heard*, they've revamped the AI for Thief II. Now, if you're in an inaccessable spot and a guard can see you but can't get to you (as was your case) they'll run away and find an archer or someone who can do a ranged attack and come back for you. I have no idea what they'll do if you're hiding under the stairs, though. ;-)
