On its first release, its multiplayer options were pretty much standard Quake fare... not very innovative or even that great compared to others of the same style. It was only later that the TeamFortress Classic was introduced as an upgrade, providing team and class based online warfare, and which was not available for any of the original, and great, reviews that I read.

Which brings me to an odd note regarding that game. I have never played HL as it was meant to be played. Never took the role of Doc Freeman, not once. Here at work, we play the HL mod Counter-Strike on our LAN. I've logged in several dozens of hours playing CS, a few hours playing MP HL, but never had the chance to actually play Half-Life.
