I think you may have misunderstood what the game says... Apologies if I'm wrong.

When the game says "The Whitestone is to the southeast", it means southeast of your current position. So if you're in the northwest corner of the forest, the Whitestone could be near the northeast corner but still be southeast of where you are right then.

The best way to find the Whitestone is to walk around the forest until you get several hints as to its location. You might get a "to the southwest" in one spot, and a "to the northwest" in another spot, so you know the Whitestone has to be south of the one and north of the other, as well as west of both. You can get several of these hints and narrow the location down to a handful of trees by the time you've explored most of the forest.
