I like the Athelete's Foot idea; besides some itching and burning, it's pretty harmless. You never hear about some outbreak and related deaths. So you'd need to tweak the fungus a bit to make it more realistic. It could be irradiated and become powerful (a la Godzilla), or cross breed with an alien fungus that arrives on a meteor, space shuttle, or something. Then people die from a foot fungus. The burning could be so severe that people spontaneously combust. What could be more fun?
