Down with smasharoo movies. posted by Howard on Thursday, March 9, 2000, at 19:12:42:
I agree. Movies shouldn't destroy irreplaceable antiques just for a cheap thrill. They can destroy all the modern cars they want, as far as I'm concerned. My wife moans in anguish when a sports car gets smashed, but if it's a car that's currently in production, who cares? The moviemakers aren't destroying one of a limited number of relics we have from a bygone era. It's not just cars -- I'd feel the same way if they destroyed old houses or paintings or other things.
What IS funny are a lot of the old Laurel & Hardy sketches -- they destroyed more Model T's than I can count. At the time they made them, those cars were current, so there's no problem. And they destroyed them in utterly hilarious ways. Today all they can think to do is run cars off cliffs and explode them on impact. Yawn.
