Ah. Thanks, Jimmy. I know what I did wrong... I plugged q = d - 6 into 10q + 25d = 20, rather than into q + d = 20. I erroneously equated total value-amount with number of coins. Ouch.

In high school, I think students often learn to solve problems by rote rather than through comprehension. So I actually don't "know" the steps involved in this problem... The q + d = 20 equation is a straightforward example of the Additive Whatever principle. Then what's the *technical* term for realizing the total amount 10q + 25d is equivalent to 25q + 10d + 90 ?
