Well, I like to think of The Matrix as a blend of sci-fi and fantasy. The Sci-Fi comes, obviously, from the future setting and all the techno-gadgets, much less the Matrix itself. The Fantasy degree is prevalent in the idea of destiny and those things which are unexplained, only accepted. That's why I like the movie so much... it's got that healthy degree of fantasy =)
