Cheating is doing anything that isn't allowed in order to gain an academic advantage. That seems vague, but it's true - if the teacher, for example, says you are not allowed to use your notes on a test (typically, in my experience, it is assumed that that is the case unless the teacher explicitly says otherwise), then using your notes is cheating. But if the teacher allows you to, then it's not cheating.

Copying from another student is almost universally considered cheating, as is getting a copy of the test from someone who has already taken it and studying that.
