It's not that they don't have any imagination[*], it's that they all think alike. Consequence: somebody looks around and thinks "Now would be a good time to do a Jane Austen movie", and somebody, somewhere, has thought exactly the same thing at exactly the same time.

[*] I'm not saying they don't need more imagination - some of them do, desperately. But this is not the argument to establish that.
Possible arguments would include "How many movies made these days are sequels?" and "How many movies these days are adapted from books/TV series/plays/other movies?".
