Let me start by saying this: One of the most important things my mother ever taught me, not by telling it to me over and over, and not by using examples, even, but by living it, is to respect your elders.

I'm still trying to understand why the young people are all so defensive about this list....it's not like anyone is personally attacking anyone for not knowing something. This list is clearly a demonstration of how much people in older generations have lived through, and how fast things have changed and technology has grown. I mean, life the 1890's was, frankly, not much different than, say, the 1850's or the 1820's or 1800's. But the differences between 1900 and the 1930's, and the 1950's and the 1970's and 2000 are atounding! We've gone from horses and carriages to jets and spaceshuttles. My parents would never have dreamed of logging onto a computer (in their home, no less!) and chatting with someone literally halfway around the world (wink at Brunnen-G) in real time. I could go on and on.

But my main point is this: This whole list is not a put-down of youth. It's a recognition of maturity, and having lived through a time when amazing advances have been made in all aspects of human culture. The people who DO remember these things deserve your respect, not your impudence and your fatuous attempts to contradict them. If you are feeling like older generations are looking at the things on this list and somehow feeling superior because they do remember them, think about this:
It's responses like some of the ones below that
prove why maturity in itself IS something to look up to.
