Don't even get me started ranting about grammar checkers ... oh wait, you did, too late!

The concept of having grammar books doesn't take into consideration the fact that language (or at least, living languages like English -- Latin doesn't count) are constantly evolving. That's why modern English is different from Middle English. The ultimate source that decides what is grammatically correct is native speakers, who can tell you whether a sentence makes sense or not.
Until they invent an AI that processes language the same way humans do (which will be quite a feat, considering we don't even know how humans do it!), then grammar checkers are a crock. MS Word doesn't speak English. It doesn't know whether my sentence makes sense or not.

I think they should at least be renamed "style checkers." For example, MS Word's "grammar" checker actually just keeps you within the bounds of a particular, predetermined style. This is all well and good if you want to use it for business letters, but IMO, for most writing, we shouldn't constrain ourselves to what Bill Gates thinks our style should be.
