This is a total riot, reported by the newspaper Sjaellands Tidende and the Reuters news agency: Last Saturday, a Danish man set off a real-life sea rescue mission... while playing with toy ships in his bathtub.
The drunken man called in repeated mayday alarms to Denmark's Maritime Sea Rescue Command as he piloted his water toys. He claimed he was the captain of a coaster called the "Arrow" with 12 crew on board. Giving a position off the coast of Bornholm -- a Danish island in the Baltic Sea -- he said his vessel was listing 45 degrees and one crew member had been washed overboard. The Danish navy immediately launched a huge rescue operation but found no trace of the "sinking" ship. Police finally traced the false alarms to the man's house outside of Copenhagen. Now he's been fined and sued for compensation of 10,000 kroners ($1,400 US; $2,000 CAN; $2,700 NZ :) for his fake maritime "disaster" -- which is reported to be the first of its kind on record.
