Well, I'm not going to talk about the "best" books, but rather my favorites (I simply haven't read enough to logically talk about the best out there). Actually, I'd really only like to add Alan Moore's brilliant comic "Watchmen" to the lists that have been generated so far. I'm not a particularly big comics fan, but I was persuaded to read this a while ago and am still impressed with it, it's characters, and it's ending. The book (I read the collected trade paperback... I think there are eight comics that make up the entire story, though they're all continous and best read together) is about an Earth where superheroes are real, and dwells on what the world would be like (the U.S. won Vietnam, and Nixon is still president during the height of the Cold War). Very good stuff, and it's really the best of what the medium has to offer.
