What I did on New Year's Eve

Stayed home. Spent some time on the computer. Watched TV. The ABC (Australia's government-funded non-commercial TV station) cancelled normal programming for 25 hours to show New Years celebrations from around the world. They and their international partners managed to get exclusive rights to televise the Sydney fireworks, which apparently upset one of our commercial stations no end. So, for an hour or two leading up to midnight, I watched apocalypse completely fail to strike in Sydney and Melbourne, Adelaide, and Queensland, in that order. (Queensland is actually in the same time zone as Sydney and Melbourne usually, but they're on Daylight Saving and it isn't.) The televised celebrations in Western Australia were a bit dull, so after the countdown we went outside and watched fireworks being let off at the fairgrounds.
Midnight hit New York at one o'clock on the afternoon of New Years Day. The Australian linking announcer made a comment along the lines of "Well, you can all relax. It's definitely the year 2000 now, because the Americans have welcomed it with ticker tape."
Pa"did you know MS Word's spell checker doesn't recognise 'o'clock'?"ul
