You're not going to believe this, but I went to a middle school basketball game last night and it was the first one I'd seen in decades. When I was teaching, I always got stuck in the concession stand and couldn't see the action. Anyway, my granddaughter is a cheerleader and I more or less had to go. But I enjoyed it more than I expected to.

A strange thing happened. About halfway through the fourth quarter of the girls' game, my wife turned to me and said, "Did you notice that number 21 only has one hand?" Sure enough. She had a left arm and a wrist,but no hand. The strange thing was that I had been watching her all through the game. She was small, but moved quickly and scored several long shots. She took rebounds away from much taller girls, and stole the ball repeatedly. But I hadn't noticed the missing hand. It was almost like she hadn't noticed it either.
