I think I'll invent a spider remover for people like you two. How does this sound: a ten-foot pole (if we mount it on a swivel tripod for support it can be even longer) with a closed dustpan arrangement at the far end. The dustpan can be placed over the spider and a system of pulleys operates a small brush to flick it inside and close the lid on it. There can be a giant netting screen halfway along the ten-foot pole so that the user feels more secure and there is no risk that the spider will be flicked in her direction by accident. Then the spider can be disposed of as you see fit: either you just swivel the pole around to a window and drop it outside to wreak its evil elsewhere, or you can pull the other string on the pole which activates a flamethrower inside the closed dustpan.
