I'm curious as to why you rule out "Citizen Kane" as a response. Have you seen it? If so, did you not appreciate it? Or do you just find it too predictable a response, and so you're trying to come up with other possible "best" choices? There's a reason just about every film scholar calls "Citizen Kane" the best movie ever: it probably is. It was absolutely groundbreaking in a number of ways. And, unlike some of the so-called "great" movies, it's really watchable. It's not as if it's homework to watch it.

My two personal favorites, however, are "Singin' in the Rain" and "2001: A Space Odyssey"; which comes first depends on my mood at the time, I suppose.
