Yeah, the more definite and insisting "scoopers" sound, the less I'm inclined to believe it. That test sketch of Leo looked more like a test sketch for him in the role of Obi-Wan than for Anakin. My guess is that's a leftover from the casting days of Episode 1, if indeed it's even legitimate in the first place.
