I spent the last four hours out on the America's Cup racecourse and just got back to the ol' desk job all wet, cold and covered in salt. What a *great* day. It's the closest I've been to the racing yet, and those IACC yachts just fly. It's a grey, overcast windy day here, and the trip out to the course was just 40 minutes of wave-crashing. Sheets of spray flying up two storeys high (which is where I was, on a big boat for a change). Out on the racing circle there were times when we might as well have been out at sea - it was clagged in enough with rain haze all around the horizon that the mainland and outer islands weren't visible a lot of the time. It's incredible to watch those yachts move. They're more like splinters of carbon fibre than yachts. The sail area in proportion to the boat underneath is enormous, and they move so fast it's awe-inspiring to think they're only wind powered.
