Geometry speak

I looked at the poll question this morning and it reminded me of a story. Yes, I admit it. Almost anything reminds me of a story.

A very poor, uneducated family who lived in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky finally saved up enough money to send their oldest son off to Pikeville so that he could attend high school. His first trip home was at Thanksgiving and the family listened eagerly to his stories of the big city and the wonderful things he was learning in school. They were so proud, they invited some neighbors over for Thanksgiving and after dinner, the father was bragging a little. He told the guests about his son's grades and added that he was learning to speak proper English and could also speak French and Geometry.

Then he turned to the son and said, "Son, say something for our friends in Geometry ."

So to humor his father, he said "Pi R square."

The old man was flabergasted. "Son," he said, "I've spent my life savings to send you off to school and they haven't taught you a thing! Pie are round, Son. Cornbread are square!"

(joke circa 1948)
