Impeached

Well, two of the four articles of Impeachment have passed in the House, and President Clinton stands Impeached. He is only the second President in US History to be Impeached, and the first elected President.

The next step is trial in the Senate. Conviction can only be achieved by a 2/3rds majority vote in the Senate. Only if he is convicted can he Constitutionally be removed from office by Congress.

I personally agree with Sam that this is a travesty and merely an attempt by the Republican party to exercise power they do not have. What Clinton did was wrong and illegal (the two articles that passed were those refering to pergury and obstruction of justice) but should not be considered Impeachable offenses. In my mind, an Impeachable offence should be something concerning treason or other matters of national security, or perhaps high crimes such as murder or rape. I do not think the Constitution specifically lists what may be an Impeachable offence, and the precedent set today may forever lower the standards as to what can be considered an Impeachable offence. I can only hope that if this type of situation ever comes up again, that there will be a more level-headed and less reprehensible Congress in session to handle it.

The President has repeated his oath not to resign. I sincerely hope he doesn't, because I think that is the only thing that could make this situation worse. I personally do not like Bill Clinton as President, but I'd vote for him a zillion times before I voted for Al "Eco-Terrorist Cyborg" Gore. And guess who gets to be President for two years if Clinton calls it quits?

Any other opinions on this subject?
