Looks like you just missed what you needed to do. You won't need any more items. For a hint, placing a stone in one of the pedestals in the tower "powers up" more than one mechanism at once.

Yeah, one for the palace might be a good idea. (Something you can grab from the otherwise empty Documentation Office early on, perhaps?) Actually the palace was the first thing I sketched out when planning the game -- no surprise. So making a cleaner version of that would be easy enough.

One idea I've been considering is an auto-mapping feature that keeps track of what locations you've been to and shows a map of where you've been. I'll probably do that for certain areas that fit nicely on grids, at least, since it would be via tables in HTML.
