Making the Charlie panels actually gave me a hint of that rush you get from heights.
This strip was lucky for me. I had the idea before I had the images, so I wasn't sure I could do it. I figured if I could find a shot of Sinbad vaguely looking upward, I could have Charlie drop in from out of view. But then I found that shot up the mast, which was even better.
The other image I needed to make the joke work was a shot of a couple people looking vaguely down at the deck, with enough of the deck visible to fit Charlie in. I scoured all the ship scenes in the movie a couple times, started to think I couldn't do it, and then finally stumbled on the frame I used. What's weird about that is that it was literally ONLY one frame that would work. Ali and Poochie were NOT looking at the deck but rather each in the process of moving: Ali was getting up, and Poochie was just generally milling about. But for this one single frame, it sort of looks like they're looking at the same spot on the deck.
The Bald Cook was looking another direction, so I cropped his head out, and Cantu was doing something else just to the right, so I cropped him out entirely. But the image worked.
