Wow, thanks. I'd suspected that there was no randomness, given the complete lack of non-deterministic working elsewhere in the game (I thought a quantum mechanics-style randomness hiding behind the apparently deterministic mechanics rather unlikely), but I hadn't really appreciated the sheer number of factors you'd have to go through to produce an entirely fair but non-random system. Interesting stuff.
