I'm from the Montreal area (south shore), and I perfectly remember the '98 Ice Storm. I don't think this will be outpassed anytime soon, and I hope not.
Ice accumulated on high-power lines, and wind started making the lines oscillate in the wrong direction, until WHOLE LENGTHS of high-power lines went down like a serie of dominos (it took more than a month to repair everything). If memory serves, that storm was on a Thursday, and on Friday evening, I had to cross the most affected area to go from university to my parent's home. I crossed a town with half the streets obstructed by electric lines. I came to a road closed by a police car; when I asked him if the road was ok, he told me: "I don't know, follow me!" I also saw blue lightnings, caused by an exploding transformer. That night, when I went to bed, I cried like a baby, it has been too much.
