One possibility is firing a single cruise missile at a point on Russian soil where it would do no harm, but still be noticed, as a warning to the Russian government. I think I would certainly have ordered F-16's to briefly intrude into Russian airspace at various points, also as a warning. Beyond that, I'm not sure.
Should the US have dropped a bomb on Russian ground, or only sent some F-16 on the Russian sky, that would have been an act of war between United-States and Russia. Probably only what Russia would need to launch a more direct attack on America ground.
However, sending support to Georgia, whether direct (attacking Russian troups on Georgian ground) or indirect (supplying vehicles and medical supply - perhaps are they already doing this!) would help Georgia and send the message to Russia that United-States is watching them.
