Summer Movie Preview 2008 posted by Sam on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at 16:59:49:
Ok, this is an old post I know, but I had to put my two cents in. Although half the summer has come and gone with some of these movies, I'll give you what I think about the ones I've seen and what I've heard about the ones I've haven't.
Iron Man This movie was really good and one of the best superhero movies to date. I really thought that Marvel Studios did a great job with their first movie and Robert Downy, Jr did a fantastic job. Nothing bad to say about this one.
Speed Racer I really wanted to see this on IMax when the wife and I were up at Opryland, but we were a week early. I've heard both sides of it on this one. It'll be going on my NetFlix Q but probably not at the top.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian I thought this movie was really good. So far it's a lot like the first one, because I wasn't too sure what to think of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe when I saw it in theaters, but it really grew on me. Same goes with this, I know it's a really good movie, but I'll have to watch it again to really grasp whether I think it's better than the first.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls The first half of this movie was like stepping back in time and watching one of the first three in the theaters. Sadly, I thought it fell off a bit with some stuff being a little too over-the-top and they really didn't have to show off their abilities at CG with the ending... other than that, I really enjoyed it. The motorcycle chase at the beginning of the movie was amazing.
Kung-Fu Panda I don't care if you're a skeptic, I was as well, but I went to see this because I kept hearing how good it was, and I do like Jack Black when he's in the right role. Let me just tell you, this movie is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a while. Yes, that does include live action. It had the best animation of any movie I've seen. The characters moved with the grace you would expect from kung-fu masters. Not only is the voice-acting hilarious, but the animations were just as funny. It really was a visual and comedy masterpiece. I watched it twice one weekend and I will own it when it comes out. The only down side is the predictable storyline, but it's a freakin' animated feature, so no one really cares.
The Happening I've heard more bad about this movie, but I'm definitely going to check it out. The thing about M. Night Shyamalan's movies is that each individual will either like them or dislike them for completely different reasons. Most of my buddies hated it, but a few have like it, so I will check it out. I actually really enjoyed Lady in the Water, so who knows, maybe I'll enjoy this as well.
The Incredible Hulk God, I wanted to see this so bad, but by the time I got back to the theaters The Dark Knight was out and I was NOT missing it. I've heard good things about it, but really... you can't do worse than Ang Lee.
Get Smart I'm a HUGE fan of the show and this was up for grabs the same day I watched Kung-Fu Panda, and I still want to see it, but what I've heard is that Steve Carrell is PERFECT for the part of Maxwell Smart. I'm definitely watching this, if not buying it as soon as it comes out. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
The Love Guru I've heard both sides of the spectrum on this, but both sides agree that it's just more of the Austin Powers comedy, whether you like that or not I guess will be the factor on this movie. I'll watch it, but I'm not spending the money to see it in theaters.
Wall-E Heard really really good things, but I've also heard that it's not quite the best Pixar movie. Don't know if I'd see this or Kung-Fu Panda a third time. I'll be good when it comes out, I'm sure it'll take advantage of my HDTV.
Wanted Good action and good comedy, not quite the caliber as The Matrix. The first one that is...
Hancock I love Will Smith. I enjoy his comedy and think he's really turned into a phenomenal actor, all you have to do is watch either Pursuit of Happiness or I Am Legend to see that. This movie looks right up my alley, but I've heard that it was good but not great.
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army I'm going to see this. I've heard amazing things from my friends. I guess this is the year of the comic books!
Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D Brenden Fraser is still around? Why?
The Dark Knight I'm going to be watching this movie at least 2 or 3 more times. It's great. The movie itself needs another once over for me to decide on how it is as a whole, but I truly believe that Heath Ledger, despite the situation, deserves an Oscar nomination. Period. I absolutely believe that he was the single greatest villain in any movie ever. He's completely frightening at times and hilarious at others. You know that he's twisted, but somehow are still surprised at the things he keeps doing. Words can't describe what I thought of his job in this role...
Space Chimps Dumb. I will not watch it. I'd rather watch Kung-Fu Panda for the rest of the year than even thinking about this movie.
Mamma Mia! Sometimes a movie comes out that makes me really hate people. This is one of them. I want this movie to go away more than a Uwe Boll movie. Terrible.
The X-Files: I Want to Believe Meh. Was never an X-Files fan, but I'd probably rent it.
Step Brothers I will watch this. As much as I liked the first hour of Talladega Nights, this movie looks much better. Gotta love John C. Reilly.
Swing Vote I'll bite and watch it on DVD.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor I'm sorry, but The Mummy Returns really killed me on the franchise. I probably won't watch it unless I have a whole lot of people tell me it's good. And it'll have to blow them away.
Tropic Thunder HAHAHA!!! God this is going to be good...
Star Wars: The Clone Wars *sigh* The cartoon is really cool, but a movie? Not sure if this is a good move.
Bangkok Dangerous Nicholas Cage? I'm there. It'll be weird, but probably worth seeing.
I really just posted that because I'm listening to Pandora and wanted to tell you how much I loved Kung-Fu Panda and The Joker...
