I think it was very nice that we didn't have to register for the Rinkforum in the past but unfortunately with the increase in spam that the site has been experiencing and so forth, the need for registration arises. Be aware that this site doesn't have a full-time staff that can spend a lot of time pruning out massive amounts of spam - with registration, that means that more time can be spent developing site content.

I don't like password character minimums or maximums myself, but sometimes that's just the way it goes. Be thankful that there aren't annoying "type this picture in the box here" - that would be a lot worse, right?
