And here is my list:

6. Predator (1987) - An invasion movie, albeit one where the invasion force consists of only one alien. I first saw this movie when it aired on television in the early nineties, and it certainly captured my imagination. I went into it cold, not really knowing what it was all about... that's a good way to see this movie.

5. Dark City (1998) - I'd never heard of this movie before it was featured in an AMT top six segment about sympathetic villains. I Netflix'd it last summer. This one goes into the "abduction" category, but I can't say too much more on that score without spoiling.

4. Signs (2002) - In this suspense movie by M. Night Shyamalan, the alien invasion sort of takes a back seat to the exploration of the main characters. In my opinion, this is probably M. Night's weakest film to date (that I have seen) with one major plot hole, but I still enjoyed it. The best, or at least most memorable scene from the movie is Merril watching the news in the closet.

3. Star Trek: First Contact (1996) - This action-packed alien invasion movie is the best of the Next Generation films. Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise must not only combat the Borg's invasion of Earth, but of their own ship as well! Even if you don't care for Trek, you may find something to enjoy about this movie.

2. The Forgotten (2004) - I think this movie was forgotten by many, and I picked it up at a Blockbuster DVD sale for three bucks, so I wasn't expecting much when I watched it. Turned out to be a nice little movie, with surprises around every corner. Not at all what I was expecting, and I recommend it.

1. War of the Worlds (1953/2005) - I was mainly thinking of the remake when I started this list, but I don't want to leave the original out. This is the "original" alien invasion story. The '53 version tells the story of the invasion from the point of view of a scientist trying to help figure out a way to stop the aliens. The '05 tells the same story but from the perspective of a single family just caught up in the events. The newer version definitely is one that I can identify with a bit more. Plus I like the tripods better than the floating ship-thingies.
