Still on the road

After completing the Natchez Trace tour, we decided to go to New Orleans. Bad idea. As soon as we got there we got stuck in a traffic jam of sports fans bound for the Super Dome. We inched down canal street and then set out for I-10. The French Quarter showed few signs of flood and hurricane damage, but the rest of the city in in various stages and total wreck. Much of the damage is visible from the freeways.
Most bridges are open, but many of the long ones are still under repair and traffic is often down to two lanes. New bridges are sometimes under construction alongside old bridges.
Along the Gulf, east of New Orleans, towns are still almost wiped out. Pass Christian was the worst, but some homes have been rebuilt. City Hall is just a battered concrete slab. Some fishing piers are in ruins, but others are newly rebuilt. We saw a large steel trawler across the highway from the beach. Beaches looked clean and the sand is its normal powered-sugar white.
At Mobile, we turned north, spending the night at a motel on a Creek Indian reservation. We are currently at our granddaughter's house in Georgia and will stay here tomorrow visiting relatives. Home maybe Wednesday.
Overall, a great road trip. I took pictues. Howard
