I distinctly recall the key to the mansion being where the ogre is. In any case, entering the mansion will solve several of your other problems.

You defeat the cave monster in the same way you defeated all enemies in Sword of Voltar... keep swinging until it dies. Actually, I'm pretty sure the Cave Monster (capitalized to contrast all other monsters that just happen to be found in the cave) was an intentional parody of Voltar's combat system.

No.

I don't think so.

Don't worry about it for now. Its use will become apparant later.

That's a lot of questions, so I suggest the cave and mansion should be your priorities right now.
