More Early Years - Sword of Voltar - generally stuck

Basically, I've been everywhere I can, and have run out of things to do. I have:

* Jewel
* Lance
* Book
* Flower
* Sword
* Magnifying Glass

I've been into the volcano and ended up wandering out before I fully explored the place and can no longer get in through the volcano.

As for things I have left that I can't figure out how to accomplish:

* There's a goblin who just kills me if I try to fight him, guarding the gun.
* I cured the old man's problem, but now he wants a parchment I don't have.
* The knight wants the lance, but it's too hot. There's a dip it into the water option in one place, but I don't have anything to lower it down with.
* The castle door is locked.
