For 1991:

Hey, it was a palindrome year!

Oh, yes, the Gulf War.

On February 11th, the Unrepresented Nations & Peoples Organization... um... unwittingly made its name obsolete?

The Rodney King stuff.

Exxon was ordered to pay for its famous oil spill.

A former Senator died in a plane crash in Brunswick, Georgia.

The Republic of Georgia declared its independence.

70 tornadoes broke out in the central United States.

Boris Yeltsin became president of Russia.

The Mike Tyson rape case.

Files were released describing an idea for the "World Wide Web".

The Super Nintendo was released.

The Soviet Union collapsed, although it would not offically cease to exist until shortly after I turned 13. Gorbachev resigned when I turned 13. No connection, of course.

Linus posted to Usenet about the new OS kernel he had been developing.

The Dead Sea Scrolls become available to the public for the first time.

Clarence Thomas is confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Births:
Emma Roberts (Nancy Drew in the new Nancy Drew movie)
Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter movies)
Jamie Lynn Spears (Britney's li'l sis)

Deaths:
Michael Landon
Frank Capra
Theodor Seuss Geisel
Redd Foxx
Gene Roddenberry

There. That's more like I remember that time period. I wonder why no red flags went up...
