Daily risks

Life is just one little risk after another. I've walked around under those big oak and hickory trees in my yard for 35 years. But today, I was picking up some limbs that fell out during a small thunderstorm and noticed that some of them exceeded 4 inches in diameter and fell more than 50 feet. What if something like that hit you? The odds are against that happening, so all it gets is a passing thought.
When you drive across a bridge, do you worry about it falling down? Do you worry about a tsunami at the beach? When you get on an airplane, do you fear that it will crash? Do you hope when you get on the freeway that you will reach your exit before a giant truck crushes you?
Probably not. We accept those long-shot risks without a second thought. How many trees have you walked under? How many bridges have you crossed? Have you ever seen a tsunami? How many planes take off and land in a day's time without mishap? How many miles of freeway do you travel in a year? But there you sit, reading this drivel. Uninjured. People have accidents every day, but most of us go for years without breaking a bone or requiring stitches.
Sometime maybe your luck will run out, but worry about the serious risks, like smoking in bed, or driving sleepy, in traffic, while talking on the phone, and drinking hot coffee.
Wear your seat belt, use that pot holder, go in the house before the storm begins, pay attention when using power tools, and don't turn the light on with wet hands. Enjoy life. How"What, me worry?"ard
