You need to play the poker game before you have the money to check into the boarding house (you'll be charged for a week's pay). The game needs a different form of currency than what you have now; perhaps a hungry man could give you what you need? Got some food ingredients with you already?

P.S. When you ask for a hint, it's usually best to also post your inventory, so that others who have played the game through can know where you are and what you still need to do.
