The hammer is in a certain building in the town spelled with two L's (Have you been to the chasm yet?). You'll need to use the crate to reach it (preferably when no one is around to see you). It'll help you get something to see with, but you haven't got the item you need to use with it yet. If you can access the town with two L's in its name, you'd best explore it thoroughly first.
