Game of Ages - missing gold

I can't find a 2nd gold coin to buy the wire clippers - have stolen 1 from Gestald. I can get in the shack but can't find/do anything (empty shelf). I have found the locked gate via the chasm and the infinite south road. Also I don't have a torch for the forest.
My inventory is: 1 Gold Coin,Life Preserver, Food Rations,Tinderbox,Clear Focus Stone,9 Red Gemstones,Guard's Sword,Bucket,Key of Opening, Crate,1 Black Gemstone,Stone of Strengthening,Rope,Portrait
I've rechecked everywhere but can't seem to find anything I've missed.
