How to view map (Outlaws)

OK, I've gotten the map from the lock-picking old lady in the upstairs room, but the game doesn't allow me to access it. I thought when I looked out the window, I might see a new way to the desert and then I would be able to look at the map, but no. So now I'm stuck with going back revisiting all the places I've been before, which, truth to tell, is getting kind of old. Any suggestions? My inventory is 26 dollars, my gun, matches, altar cloth, hat pin, feather, key, playing cards, cord, map, cabbage and spitoon.

By the way, does this key I have actually open anything?
