To be fair, there are very few actors who don't look basically human. For movies, it got to the point that a main character could be represented with CGI a handful of years ago, but TV shows, with their longer runs and lower budgets, still have to make do with actors in make-up. I think the other issue is that audiences might not emotionally connect with characters that don't bear any resemblance to anything they know about.

What I find rather more annoying is the idea that all alien races can successfully interbreed. I mean, you have more chance of being able to have a baby with an ear of corn than with a vulcan...
