No, you don't need to beat the game to start over. There's a button at the bottom of the page to delete your saved game, which will also do the trick.

I think it will automatically say you've got it, but I'm not sure. The only thing else I remember is that some wire or part is involved in the solution more than once (involved both in a twist and a soldering operation, maybe?) I think the clue(s) you get for it are not entirely off, but you still need to go through some trial and error. Hence my least favorite puzzle of the game.
