What is the eastern most point in New York? I was working a jigsaw puzzle and it showed a lighthouse on a hill overlooking some water. There was a gravel beach in the forground, and the box said it was in New York.

First, I considered Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, because the beach appeared to be glacial material, and I knew the great lakes had plenty of that. By the time I finished the puzzle, I was ready to drag out the atlas. I had the name of the place, from the box, but maps showed nothing.

So were else could a lighthouse be in New York? Long Island, of course. It was formed by an ice age glacial moranine, and the beaches might look like the one near the lighthouse. It took about a minute to find it. Montauk Point is on the eastern end of Long Island about as far east as you can get and still be in New York. The lighthouse is probably located in a state park by the same name.

This country doesn't have many coastlines that I haven't covered, but I have seen very little of Long Island. I guess I need to put it on the list.
