You don't need to kill the guardian. Give him something you find in the tower. There is a silent man who could use the scroll. He will give you something you need to get in the tower. Remember what the soothsayer said "Read everything twice". Did you talk to the orge? Did he tell you something? Right now you should be trying to get to the tower. Maybe you haven't discovered it yet. It's near the garden as you exit. See the silent man first.
