Game of the Ages - Where Next?

I have spent all my money having Darius take me to get a focus stone, and now can't figure out what to do now that I have one!
I have:
Gemstones
Guard's sword
crate
trash
Stone of Strengthening
Clear Focus Stone
Bucket
Key of Opening
Wire cutters
Tinderbox (and the lump it left)
Portrait
Food rations
Left my rope in the circular room. Haven't found what I need to there yet.
Thought I could break up the crate to make a torch for the forest. No such luck. Thought maybe climbing a tree would break off a branch. No such luck. Also, that empty shack with a shelf has to be there for some reason...
Didn't go down the NW trail by the Wizard Castle. Didn't need to right? Darius told me not to.
What next? Thought I'd be able to finish on my own with the Boulder hint. Nope.
