My notes show that the sword disappeared after killing the frowning gnome...and I'm pretty sure you do need it toward the end. Did you go swimming already?
If at the main intersection by the castle, you tier West, you get some bounty and you'll eventually get a riddle that speaks of your money problem.
This game had alot of intersections (small, main, 3-way, and major), so map carefully to hit all possible areas. There is a well, maybe you can snatch a bucket there. Hope this helps.
