Escape from St. Mary's Time Travel Help

I have traveled back in time to find the organic matter, but cannot wash the leaf as the water flow is too strong. I also do NOT have the wrench, which I've gathered from other posts is what I need to break the cooler in order to wash the leaf. Where do I find the wrench? Can I find it once I've already traveled back in time, because I've tried looking everywhere (I think) and I haven't found it. I don't mind starting over, but would like to be advised before doing so.
