Remember that dude Kevin McClory? The short is that he retained the rights to remake Thunderball after some suitably long period of time had passed, which he did in 1983, competing with Octopussy. His big coup was signing Sean Connery to play James Bond even though he'd said 'never again' after Diamonds Are Forever, which is where the title comes from.
