It is indeed based on the Elmore Leonard novel. I missed that important detail at first.

Spurred by your comments about adaptations of his work, I skimmed through the IMDb. Seems there are quite a lot more than two:

Hombre (1967)
Valdez Is Coming (1971)
Get Shorty (1995)
Jackie Brown (1997)
Out of Sight (1998)

I left out movies he wrote directly for the screen. In any case, there are a lot more bad movies than I was expecting to find, so besides being responsible for inspiring some great adaptations, his name in the credits isn't much of a barometer for success.

As for George Clooney, I started out not liking him at all. Then at some point it was like he flipped a switch, and since then I've pretty much liked him in everything. Good Night and Good Luck, which he also directed, was just fabulous.
